Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) affect a significant percentage of men as they age. These symptoms encompass issues like weak urine flow, urgency, frequency, and nighttime urination. While various treatments are available, researchers are continuously exploring new alternatives. A recent study, published in Therapeutic Advances in Urology, investigated the potential benefits of a green and black tea extract blend called AssuriTEA Men’s Health (AMH) in managing LUTS.
Objective of the Study
The study aimed to examine how this green and black tea extract blend, AMH, impacts men with LUTS. The research was conducted as a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled study.
Study Details
The study involved 46 men between the ages of 30 and 70 who had LUTS with a minimum American Urologic Association symptom score (AUAss) of 8 and up to 24. They were randomly assigned to three groups: one group received 500 mg of AMH daily, another received 1000 mg of AMH daily, and the third group received a placebo. The participants were observed over a 12-week period. Various measurements were taken at the beginning (baseline), at week 6, and at week 12, including AUAss, uroflowmetry, postvoid residual volume (PVR), C-reactive protein (CRP), health-related quality of life (evaluated through the Short-Form 36 Health Survey or SF-36), and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).
Key Findings
- The group that received 1000 mg of AMH daily experienced a significant decrease (34.5%) in AUAss from baseline to week 12, indicating an improvement in LUTS.
- CRP levels increased in the 500 mg AMH group and the placebo group at week 12 compared to their baseline levels. However, CRP levels did not increase in the 1000 mg AMH group.
- Urine flow rate (Qmean) increased significantly in both the 500 mg and 1000 mg AMH groups compared to the placebo group.
- Postvoid residual volume (PVR) decreased significantly in the 1000 mg AMH group at week 6, indicating improved bladder emptying.
- The study also assessed the impact of AMH on quality of life and sexual function. Both the SF-36 and IIEF showed significant improvements in physical functioning and sexual desire in the 1000 mg AMH group.
Safety and Tolerability
AMH was well tolerated by the participants, with no reported adverse effects related to its consumption. There were no negative sexual side effects, and participants even reported improvements in sexual desire and physical functioning.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the study suggests that daily oral administration of 1000 mg of the green and black tea extract blend AMH can significantly improve LUTS in men in as little as 6 weeks. This improvement is accompanied by positive changes in other urological measurements, including urine flow and postvoid residual volume. Additionally, AMH was found to be safe and well-tolerated, making it a promising alternative for men seeking relief from LUTS.
